Some homeowners simply prefer the taste of filtered water over plain tap water. With summer about to be in full swing, there’s no time like the present to be prepared for all of that hot weather. Staying cool and staying hydrated are two essential parts of surviving the heat. Here’s what you should know.

Filtering Out Contaminants

What’s in your water? Water filters work much in the same way as the filters in your home’s HVAC system do – they trap particulate matter and other contaminants or pollutants. Chances are good that the water that enters your home is already going to be treated and cleaned before it reaches you. The problem is, you might not know if something has gone wrong with your pipes and plumbing. Try drinking filtered water when it’s cold and when it is at room temperature, and then compare it with its tap water counterpart. It doesn’t taste quite the same, now does it? Another consideration is whether or not the filter has been certified by NSF International, what contaminants the filter can remove.

How to Change the Filters

At some point, you will need to change the filters. Luckily, this only needs to happen once a month or so. Filters attached to drinking water faucets are much harder to interact with, especially since it can be hard to tell when the filter needs to be changed. At least with the filter on a refrigerator, you will see a little sensor light that starts green and turns yellow or red over time. One easy way to tell if you need to change the filters is if they are working too slowly.

Determining Water Needs

Take the time to determine how much water you need to drink. Also make sure that everyone understands that they need to be hydrated and that juice, soda, and coffee aren’t as hydrating, even though they might be tastier.

Some Filters Work Faster

Lastly, understand that some water filters tend to work faster than others do. The one you choose comes down to personal preference and the needs of your family. Do you want to have one mounted under the sink? How about on the countertop? Or perhaps on the faucet itself? All of these are potential options for you to choose
