What kind of shower base will you choose for your home?

Have you thought about adding another bathroom onto your home or how about updating your current one to include a stand-alone shower? If you are thinking about adding one to your home, there are some things you need to acquire. From a shower head to the knobs, there are many different hardware products you are going to need. But what about a shower base? Like most homeowners, you may not know what a shower base even is or how to choose one. Let’s take a moment to discuss what a shower base is and which shower base you should choose for your home.

What is a Shower Base?

The shower base is the foundation of your stand-alone shower. A shower base is the bottom of the shower that contains the drain and allows the water to stay within the confines of your shower stall. These bases are found in a ready-to-install unit. They are installed directly onto the subflooring and eliminate the need for a sloped mortar bed to direct the water. The shower base is molded or cast with a sloped floor, drain hole, side walls, and a threshold in a single piece of hardware. Shower bases come in a wide range of colors, sizes, and shapes to fit every bathroom in your home. They are also made in a wide variety of materials from acrylic to tile. When choosing the different materials for your shower base, it is important to choose one that fit your bathroom as well as your budget and style. Let’s take a look at some of the materials for your base.

Shower Base Materials

Acrylic bases are a less expensive option for your home but do have the downside of weakening over the years of use. A blend of acrylic and fiberglass is also an option. It has the strength of fiberglass with acrylic looks. This blend is also affordable and is more durable than regular acrylic. Copper bases have gained a lot of popularity in the past few years due to their natural material as well as their inherent antibacterial properties. These bases also age very well and are easily maintained. Corian is a resilient material that is often used for countertops. It is durable and resists scratching. It is also available in many different colors and patterns. But like Corian, there are many other different stones you could choose from for your base including onyx, limestone, marble, and granite. If you want stone but want something different, stone resin is the answer. Made from ground stone, sand, and bonding material, stone resin will give you the look and feel of stone without the high costs. Tile is the last of the base materials for you to choose from. It is a popular choice but should be bought unfinished so you can have replacements if you need them. It is not a durable as other options but is inexpensive.

Every stand-alone shower needs a base in order to stop the water from flowing throughout your bathroom. But what kind of base will you choose for your shower? For more information or to choose one for your home, call or visit WalterWorks Hardware today!
